TAIJIQUAN (TAI CHI CHUAN) FAQ
Question 3:Frequently Asked Questions Is Taijiquan a form of martial art or can it be used for self-defence? Answer: YES. Taijiquan is definitely a form of martial art, and a very powerful and deadly one too, if practiced well and in a correct manner. The slow movements that we commonly see Taiji practitioners do are just the postures that they go through to build their strength, reflexes and energy. When these postures are executed with precision and speed, they can be very effective against any attacker. But a Taiji student must remember that Taijiquan can only be effective if practised daily without fail over a long period. If you practise diligently and with the suitable guidance of an instructor, you will reach a higher stage whereby your internal energy will flourish and eventually you can control how to use it effectively. That is the ultimate that you can accomplish and once you have done that, you can effectively handle any aggressiveness of any hostiles parties. Anyway, always remember that regardless of which martial art or skill you learn, the most effective way to counter an attack is to avoid it. Yes, avoid it at all means. Talk the attacker around. Apologise even if you are not at fault. Do whatever is necessary to get out of any confrontations. In short, "diffuse the bomb before it explodes". Don't have the wrong notion that you must teach the attacker a lesson he will never forget by beating him to a pulp!!! From the ancient days till now, the most respected Masters of any form of martial arts, normally avoid any sort of confrontations. They will not fight it out with any attacker, unless they really have to. And any martial artist worth his salt will not start a fight just to prove he is better. That is a kid's mentality. Most recorder cases of martial artists who challenged others to prove their superiority have ended in a sorry state eventually. As the chinese saying goes, "Yi Shan Huan You Yi Shan Gao, Qiang Zhong Zhi You Qiang Zhong Shou" - there is always a higher mountain and there is always someone better than the best ... if you search enough. Just a thought: "Zhen Ren Bu Lou Xiang, Lou Xiang Fei Zhen Ren" - A really good Taiji practitioner will not flaunt his skill ... and many who did so are not necessarily good in them. This message is not meant to offend anyone, but just a phenomena that exists today in the martial arts scene everywhere. More Q&A will be added regularly.
